The Tour of Communist Ages in Timisoara

The Tour of Communist Ages
in Timisoara

In December 1989, communist Romania could be considered a mental hospital, where the lunatics were running the asylum and the “internees” were punished for their sanity. How did we get to have one of the most iconic dictatorships in modern history? What and who is to be blamed for this tragic condition? And not last, how did courageous people stand up and repudiate the evil leaders? The Tour of Communist Ages is trying to provide answers to these complex questions, and not only. Further on, the tour guide will unveil the 50-year geopolitical evolution that resulted in this tragic historical event known as the „Romanian Revolution of 1989.”

The tour will start in midtown, in front of the Romanian Orthodox Cathedral. We will take public transportation, as Romanians did in communist times, as not many were car owners, and head for an old communist neighborhood. We’ll see and learn about how these places came to be, how people lived there, and how many still do!

Next, on the way back to the city center, we’ll visit the place where the Romanian anticommunist revolution started in 1989 and talk about the hottest spots of those days.

Following the presentation, we will stop for a visit to the Communist Consumer Museum, which is located in the basement of the SCARTZ club. The museum is in fact a large collection of various objects and products from the Communist era. It depicts an ordinary 2-room apartment, which is basically what we couldn’t see from the outside as we walked the old neighborhood.
